This sculpture, originally made by Lydia (Karpinska) Parker in 1986, had been languishing in the foundry for years, an unwanted planning gain. At our instigation it was put up in the town centre in 1995. It was severely damaged by vandals in 2003 - the boat was broken off, as was the left arm that is still missing and the statue itself was wrenched off from the plinth leaving only its feet behind.
The statue was repaired following a combined operation involving the Royal Borough, the Maidenhead Advertiser and the Civic Society, and is now back in place at the top of the High Street after being unveiled at a ceremony on Monday 28th February 2005 by the Society’s then Patron, the Mayor, Cllr Emrys Richards.
The statue now frequently appears on promotional material for the town. |
