North Town Pond

Once part of extensive common lands to the north of Maidenhead, North Town Moor was all but surrounded when the town expanded during the Victorian period.  North Town Moor forms part of the Green Way which runs from Cookham to Bray.

Working alongside the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, the National Trust looks after this area of important green space for the benefit of all.  The northern part of North Town Moor is regularly cut for amenity purposes, providing a great space in which to go for a run or walk a dog.

The pond next to the car park is managed by Make Space for Life, along with the community orchard.  This is a great place to feed the ducks, as long as you abide by the signs put up by the volunteers who encourage you not to feed the ducks bread!

The Civic Society has long participated in the maintenance of the pond.

Members of the Civic Society spent many weekends during 1987 restoring North Town Pond. The project was our entry in that year’s Keep Berkshire Tidy competition and we were awarded a “Highly Commended” certificate.  A mechanical digger was used to remove two to three feet of silt from the water, and the broken down outlet weir was rebuilt.  This area is now fully landscaped.

It was messy work and demonstrated that members of the Civic Society are “doers” with a practical commitment to a better environment, not a talking shop!

Today, members of the Society’s Projects Group regularly monitor the quality of the water in the pond and keep a record of the aquatic life - a good indicator of the health of the pond.
